Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. extends its heartfelt sympathy to the family of Trayvon Martin whose life ended ‘much too soon’. We will continue to remember you in our prayers.

One of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity’s cardinal principles is “Uplift”. In light of Trayvon’s death, ‘uplifting as we climb’ is displayed by the thousands of protests and though social media networks around the world which evidences the ‘cry for justice’ and being a testament to how much work there is still to do in human relations.Trayvon represents all of our sons, which mandates the thorough review of the “Stand Your Ground” statute, the investigators of the allegations, the alleged perpetrator, and the process that has impeded this matter.

The fraternity does not condone violence in any form and stands in united support of a thorough investigation into this senseless tragedy.

The men of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., many who are fathers and brothers, stand ready to assist the family through efforts of its’ brother, Benjamin Crump of Parks and Crump, LLC.

It may seem unusual that a fraternity would lead the way in honoring the legacy of a sorority woman. But when it comes to Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and Gamma Pi chapter specifically, that is not unusual at all. Two of the four Cardinal Principles of the Fraternity — Scholarship and Uplift — don’t have gender-eligibility requirements when it comes to who Omega serves. That was evident today as The Super Chapter observed Black History Month by joining forces with the American Automobile Association to honor the work and legacy of Nannie Helen Burroughs.

Who is Nannie Helen Burroughs? An overlooked African American civil rights advocate and religious and education figure, she lived in the early 1900s in Washington, D.C. She was president of the Baptist Women’s Convention and established a school for Negro girls in the city in 1909. The school and a street are named in her honor in The Nation’s Capitol and that is really the extent to which most people in the metro area know her. She is also an honorary member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority – Read more…

The good works and community outreach performed by the men of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. during its recent centennial conclave is yielding dividends even after the men have returned to their homes around the world.

As part of the fraternity’s commitment to President Obama’s Fatherhood and Mentoring Initiative, chapters will conduct programs and events that promote the role patriarchs and men have in the lives of their children.

The chapters will work to change government policies in their communities, because they believe government agencies should be challenged to foster better communications and create working relationships that address policies affecting a father’s involvement in the lives of his children.

“The absence of a father has a significant impact on a child,” said Dr. Andrew A. Ray, the fraternity’s 39th Grand Basileus. “It is critical that we put our collective arms around this problem and, by doing so, we are making a very powerful statement.”

Recently Omega Psi Phi celebrated its 100th anniversary in Washington, D.C. It paid homage to its Howard University roots during the conclave by donating nearly $500,000. Fraternity leaders also met with President Barack Obama during their time in the nation’s capital. Other events centered around Omega’s emphasis on community service, social action programs and philanthropy.

“The Centennial was a glorious moment in time, when Omega Men from their respective stations in life met on the plane of friendship and fraternity…and parted on the square of Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance and Uplift,” said Ray.“We celebrated the legacy of our founders and the Omega Men who guided us through our first century, as we dedicated ourselves to enhancing their legacy in our second.”

Another highlight was the memorial service and wreath-laying ceremony that took place at Arlington National Cemetery to honor Bro. Col. Charles Young, a recipient of the NAACP Spingarn Medal and one of the first Black men to graduate from West Point.

Some collegiate members of the organization are noted for wearing camouflage pants and gold boots. This pays homage to Young, the highest-ranking African American officer in the army when World War I started, whose black combat boots were covered with sand, which made them look gold.

Entertainer Bill Cosby, NBA legend Michael Jordan, comedian/radio personality Rickey Smiley, U.S. Rep. James Clyburn, former Virginia Gov. Douglas Wilder, NASA Administrator Charles Bolden, former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher, Ernest Green of the Little Rock Nine, Black Enterprise magazine founder Earl Graves, Essence magazine founder Ed Lewis and Vernon Jordan, confidant to President Bill Clinton, are among the fraternity’s notable members; dozens of others were recognized for their contributions and professional achievements - Read more…

Should immigrants voluntarily pay an additional 25% income tax to cover the cost associated with their and their family’s immigration. This is not an attempt to bash immigrants. They are important to this nation. They make us diverse and add the spice life, culture and ideas that continues make this country great. I can think of no other beautiful women than those who immigrate and the children they produce with non-immigrants. We might not be a melting pot, but a rich spicy stew, we are.

The costs of educating their children, providing job training, college education, medical and social programs are increasing. Americans should not be require to foot that bill alone. Immigrants are a proud people and want to put some “skin in the game”, if given an opportunity.

Congress should pass a law that adds a line on federal, state, city and school districts tax forms that allow immigrants to voluntarily sign up to pay an additional 25% tax rate for 20 years. After 20 years, they would pay the regular tax rate. If we are going to resolve our immigration issue, Americans would feel better if immigrants valued the past contributions of American taxpayers whose blood, sweat and tears paid for the schools, roads, hospitals, social service agencies, police and fire services that they received in this country. It’s why most see America as the best place to come. There is enough room for all who want to come to America, if what they seek is a new start and an opportunity to build a life and fortune. America should not be seen as a land for those who want a Free Ride. That is not the mentality of most hard working immigrants who come here.

This voluntary tax would get the support of the nation, demonstrate that we value immigrant and grant them the power of choice to add their skin in the game. In return, they should be granted temporary American Citizenship with all the rights and privileges of a citizen. If they commit no crimes and pay the extra tax for 20 years, they are automatically granted full American Citizenship Rights. Any children produced after the agreement should also be granted the same. Imagine what that would do to reduce our national debt and increase revenues for public schools and states.

On 3/23/11 NBC Nightly News in their Making A Difference Segment, profiled Dr. Ann Brooks, a physician / nun serving the people of Tutwiler, MS with free or low cost medical care. They reported on the high poverty rates

of the town, but what they fail to report was that the Town of Tutwiler, MS generates over $1,000,000 Million Dollars Annually from a Private Prison.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tallahatchie_County_Correctional_Facility I, along with many others have been engaged in an ongoing effort to get an accounting of all that money.

The past and current Mayors of Tutwiler and three (a majority) of the board members have refused to provide an accounting of the funds received from the sale of water and property taxes from Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility. Letters requesting Governor Haley Barbour, Att. General Jim Hood, State Auditor, Stacey Pickering, US Att. General Eric Holder and Mississippi Newspapers investigate this matter were sent several months ago by me. To date, no one from any newspaper, state or federal office, that I contacted has responded to my letter. Why? Something rotten and unethical could be occurring. Could it be that too many well connected people have their hand in the preverbal “Cookie Jar”?

I requested that NBC Nightly News do a follow-up story, if they have the courage to ask the right questions. I also encourage bloggers, independent journalist, newspapers, cable news and film producer to investigate this and expose the truth of Tutwiler. Tutwiler has a majority Black African American population and and Black Elected Officials, who depend on the legal advice and representation of Attorney Whitney, who is White.

He is suspected by many residents to be the real power in charge of the town’s money. I suspect race might have something to do with the silence on the part of Black and White Newspapers, Politicians and people who don’t have the courage to stand up for what is legal, just and fair. http://www2.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stories.pl?ACCT=105&STORY=/www/story/03-17-1999/0000890739
